Reading time: Less than 1 minute
I like to share interesting pieces of figurative language I encounter in my reading. I write today about a metaphor from Gloria Steinem.
In honour of International Women’s Day, May 8, my favourite radio station (CBC-AM) aired an interview with Gloria Steinem. If you have the time, be sure to listen to the interview, here. (You may need to scroll down a bit to find it.)
I’ve long admired Steinem who has struck me as a smart, compassionate, persistent and funny writer and activist. But’s here’s something new I learned in the interview: She always dreaded of public speaking. That such a seeming fearless person would admit to such a worry impressed me.
But, more than that, I also appreciated the colourful metaphor she used to describe her worry. Here’s what she said:
[It was as if] each tooth acquired a sweater that you can’t get your lip over.
Isn’t that a memorable way to describe dry mouth?
